“Ushered in Silence”

Scholastic National Gold Medal & Regional Gold Key 2024

“The somber atmosphere surrounding the suburban elevator exposes an unspoken silence and a prevailing theme of waiting. The individuals in the picture are each anticipating something distinct. Similarly, in life, everyone is in a state of anticipation for something different – be it a goal, a moment, or a feeling.”

In June of 2023, one of my closest family members at heart, my grandmother, passed away due to breast cancer. My grandmother was my second mom, who raised me from the very first day of my life. I remember spending my childhood at my grandmother's house for months, waiting for my mom and dad to come back from work. Her death reminds me of the silence and the profound emotion my family went through the day she passed away, including my mom, who went through tremendous pain. Even though my grandmother passed away, she taught me the values of love and care. Studying abroad, I always receive wishes and prayers from my grandmother. She prays every day, reciting every line of the Buddhist scriptures, praying for my safety coming back. Just like how my grandmother was waiting for me to come back from school, I also wished for her to come back, but she never did. This experience with grief makes me more aware of the feelings of the people around me, whom I would reach out and show my empathy. The theme of this photograph resonates with me deeply, where each subject underscores the theme of waiting, such as waiting for their shifts to end, their next check, their lunch, meeting their family, etc. While the photograph emphasizes "waiting", it also presents the variety of personal feelings each person in this society has in every moment, and these feelings sometimes will never be understood by other people around us.
